Hi Rotaractors!

I am pleased to announce that we have 3 awards this year, with Team Spirit as the new award!

1. Herbert J. Taylor Award: Awarded to the member who best exemplifies the spirit of Rotary International’s four way test: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Does it promote goodwill and better friendships? Is it beneficial to all concerned?

2. Jamie Maynard Award: Awarded to a member who has shown outstanding leadership within the club over the past year.

3. Team Spirit Award: Awarded to a member who is the spirit of the group that makes all members want the group to succeed. The Team Spirit Award will be awarded to a member who is not only a key player in the Rotaract Club of Toronto team, but who also strives to make our team stronger, by engaging and encouraging everyone to work together in service and fellowship. This person helps bring fun, energy, and collaboration to our team.

The award winners will be announced at the changeover on Friday, June 22 at Remy’s in Yorkville.

Trump Aids Poker Walk 2012 – We raised $1,125!

The 2012 Trump AIDS Poker Walk raised over $53,000 to support groups such as The Teresa Group where they work to advance the dignity and well-being of children and their families affected by HIV and AIDS, The Salvation Army – Howard Hospital situated in the Chiweshe communal land of Zimbabwe to provide care to people of all ages, and Dignitas International, a medical humanitarian organization that develops solutions for HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, and other priority diseases.

This year the Rotarunners of the Toronto Rotaract Club woke up to a bright and beautiful day where they would go head to head with other teams to compete for the best poker hand. Although the Rotarunners didn’t win the best poker hand, in my opinion, I must say that we would have been contenders for the most creative and honest hand. The first card drawn was a four, then a five and the rest of the cards will remain a secret and only known to the members of the Rotarunners who raised $1,125. To join in on the fun and to unravel the mystery of the game, I encourage you to participate next year!

Again, congratulations to the Rotarunners for their fundraising efforts to support international and local initiatives to fight HIV/AIDS!

Finally, thank you to all our wonderful sponsors who helped support our team and a great cause. We really appreciate it.

Community Service Work with the Redwood Shelter

On Saturday, April 29, Rotaract members and friends volunteered with the Redwood Shelter that provides safe and accessible services for women and children suffering from domestic violence. From working in the nice backyard of the shelter to sorting donations and filing papers, it was a rewarding experience as well as relaxing and great time we spend there. We also had a chance to meet with women working at the shelter and enjoyed talking with them about the organization.

Thank you to our volunteers and Aislynn who made this visit possible and we look forward to continuing our volunteering with the Redwood Shelter!

Rotaract Exchange Program with The Rotaract Club of Chicago-Southland

As part of our Twinning Partnership with the Rotaract Club of Chicago Southland, the Rotaract Club of Toronto has established a Rotaract Exchange Program. In our first year of this program, members of the Rotaract Club of Chicago Southland came to Toronto for a weekend in August 2011, to build relationships through fellowship. In the second phase of our exchange program, members of the Rotaract Club of Toronto spent a weekend in Chicago (March 23-25 2012), learning about the local culture, visiting RI headquarters, and continuing to build relationships. We look forward to expanding our Exchange Program in future years!

Annual Membership Drive @ The Ballroom and Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Club

This year’s annual membership drive was held on Friday March 9 starting at the bowling alley bar, The Ballroom. Rotaractors and new friends shared drinks and conversations over a variety of finger foods. The evening proceeded to Toronto’s Yuk Yuks comedy club with 22 laugh seekers. Rotaract was a highlight at this event as we sat FRONT ROW and Benjamin “Good Ham” , “Maria” along others will stay as inside jokes with those that attended. After the comedy club, the evening continued with fellowship and challenging games of Jenga in downtown Toronto.

Hello Rotaractors,

It is that time of the year again: the time to support the Rotary International District 7070 in their 2012 Trump Aids Poker Walk!

Our Rotaract Club of Toronto is participating in The 2012 Trump Aids Poker Walk, to raise funds for international and local initiatives by participating Rotary Clubs and other groups to win the war on HIV/AIDS through education, prevention, treatment, support for orphans, surviving guardians and people living with AIDS. In addition, communities stricken by HIV/AIDS will be assisted in overcoming shortages of drinking water, food, or shelter – essential for recovery and a sustainable future.

We raised $740 from our “Tapped” Fundraiser!

Presenting a cheque for $740 to Norma D. from The Rotary Club of Eglinton to Support a Rainwater Harvesting Project in Nakuru, Kenya.

On Thursday, March 22, in celebration of World Water Day, the Rotaract Club of Toronto screened the movie “Tapped”, a documentary about the impact of bottled water on human health, the economy, and the environment. Ron Denham, Chair of the Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group (WASRAG), spoke to the group about the importance of water conservation. He shared his experience at the rainwater harvesting project in Nakuru, Kenya, where the $740 in proceeds are being donated.

Many thanks to Ron, our volunteers, and all the participants for making this a great event!

Screening of “Tapped” on World Water Day March 22nd

What are you doing on World Water Day?

Come celebrate World Water Day with us and help support a rainwater harvesting project in Nakuru, Kenya. Our special guest, Ron Denham, from Water & Sanitation Rotarian Action Group (WASRAG), will be our guest speaker for the evening and he is personally involved with the water project in Nakuru. Ron is a Rotarian, an exceptional speaker, and an strong advocate for clean water and sanitation for all. Check out Startwithwater.org to learn more about WASRAG.
